Images of Helmshore Railway Station. It lasted for the best part of a hundred years Helmshore in Rossendale Lancashire on the Bury-Accrington Line. Built by the East Lancashire Railway it was a line of incredible beauty with magnificent viaducts and bridges providing wonderful views.
After operation by the ELR, the L&YR, LNWR and LMS the line fell in to the hands of BR. When the railways (together with other British Industries were stolen by the post war socialist government) it began to fail - again like every industry stolen by the socialists. The line was closed in 1966 but only after timetable changes made in 1965 making the line unusable for its regular passengers.
Today the population of Helmshore is approximately 10 times what it was in 1966, most of which commute to Manchester, Bury and Bolton daily to work all of which were connected by rail ... all by car. Fo a while there was a chance that the new ELR may have operated the line but in the end they chose the Bacup line into Rawtenstall instead. (Hits: 3768)
